Campaign promoting Nordic literature in the Czech Republic
Since September 2015, the #ReadNordic campaign has been presenting a series of events promoting Nordic literature to the Czech audience ending with literary crescendo in May 2016, when the Nordic countries will be the guest of honour at Book World Prague, the largest book fair in the Czech Republic. With the help of the non-profit civic association, Scandinavian House, the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish Embassies in Prague have come together to create a cavalcade of events promoting Nordic literature in the Czech Republic. The campaign started in September and is divided into eight months, each dedicated to a different theme or genre (children's literature, graphic novels, classics, crime novels, contemporary prose, film adaptations, poetry, and humour). Each month will feature at least one cultural event – H. C. Andersen's Week took place in September, Joakim Pirinen and Lene Ask visited KomiksFEST! in October, moderated discussion with translators of Finnish historical novels was organised in November and many children are looking forward to the scavenger hunt, taking place in the Municipal Library in Prague in December. More events are to follow in 2016. At the centre of the campaign is also a reading challenge – read eight Nordic books, share your reading experiences on social networks and get the chance to win a trip to Scandinavia, along with many other valuable prizes.
Nordic literature is famous around the world, not least in the Czech Republic, a country where literature has played an important role in its cultural history and everyday life. This campaign offers a unique opportunity to promote a broader image of Nordic values in the Czech Republic. The campaign runs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #ReadNordic. It is peaking in May 2016, where the Nordic countries will be the guest of honour on Book World Prague, the largest literary event in the country annually attended by 35.000 people. The Nordic stand will feature high profile, award-winning authors such as Kim Leine, Katja Kettu, Jostein Gaarder, Lena Andersson and others from all Nordic countries. The Nordic stand shall be a showcase of Nordic values, such as sustainability, inclusiveness, freedom of expression and cross-cultural dialogue. Students of the Czech Technical University in Prague are designing the stand as their semester assignment, as we see great potential in the ideas of young students, in addition to fostering interest in Nordic countries and their culture.
The project has been supported by the Nordic Culture Fund, Danish Arts Foundation, Swedish Arts Council as well as by the national literary agencies of the Nordic countries and a number of Nordic companies present on the Czech market.
