Academia Publ. house publishes Finnish Kalevala in Prague

Invitation to Kalevala's publication event

Academia Publ. House announces the publication of Finnish national epic Kalevala, with an extensive study by Professor Jan Čermák. In such a comprehensive version, with an expert, but reader-friendly study, Kalevala has been published for the first time.

The Finnish epic Kalevala (1849) is the most significant and mature work in the period of development of the Finnish national identity, compiled by philologist and folklorist Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884); it is one of the essential texts of the world epic tradition. The edition is based on the revised translation of the epic into Czech (1894) by the recognized Czech writer Josef Holeček (1853–1929). The revision of his translation is not only the philological one, but it also reflects the new findings about Kalevala for example in the field of linguistics, cultural history and ethnography. Besides the epic itself, the book contains 8 reproductions of the original illustrations by the most recognized Finnish painter and illustrator of Kalevala, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, and a comprehensive study which depicts the context of Finnish national culture and literature development on the background of the world epic poetry and explores the genesis, structure, genre and style characteristics of Lönnrot’s text.
